Seasonal Highlights

1. Climate in China

During summer 2014, seasonal surface air temperature averaged over China was 21.1¡ãC, with 0.2¡ãC above normal (20.9¡æ). The mean precipitation was 320.1mm over China, which was 1.6% below normal (325.2mm). For the season, extremes of High Temperature (HT), Consecutive High Temperature Days (CHTD), Daily Precipitation (DP) and Consecutive Precipitation Days (CPD) were observed in China.

 

2. General Circulation Features

Northern Hemisphere: During the boreal summer (Jun-Aug 2014), in the field of 500hPa geopotential height anomaly, positive anomalies above 4 dam covered regions from the northern Norwegian Sea to the Baffin Bay, locations of the Arctic Ocean and the northwestern Bering Sea. Meanwhile, negative anomalies below -4 dam were observed over locations of the eastern Kala Sea and the Alaska.

Southern Hemisphere: During the boreal summer, in the field of 500hPa geopotential height anomaly, positive anomalies above 4 dam covered the southwestern South Atlantic Ocean and the South Australian Basin, with central values above 8 dam over the southwestern South Atlantic Ocean. Meanwhile, negative anomalies below -4 dam covered the central and southern South India Ocean and locations around the Antarctica.
