Climate in China
During this summer, the mean surface air temperatures were observed above normal in most of China, with positive departures above 1¡æ in middle of East China, most of North China, northern Northeast China, eastern Northwest China and the region from southeastern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau to western Yunnan. In the season, precipitation totals were 30-50% more than normal in the region from northten Hubei to the Huaihe River basin, most of Xinjiang, parts of Jilin and Guangdong, with more than 200% above normal in southeastern Xinjiang. Meanwhile, rainfall totals were less than 30-50% in northern Northeastern China, middle and western Inner Mongolia, western Gansu, western Tibet and parts of Xinjiang.
Climate in the World
For
this summer, the mean
surface air temperatures were above normal in most of the world. Positive
departures above 1¡æ
were observed in northern China, Mongolia, most of Russia, southwestern and
northern Europe, Alaskan, northeastern USA, southern Brazil, northern Argentina,
northwestern Africa and South Africa.
In
this summer, precipitation
totals were 30-100% less than normal in parts of North China and Central
Siberia, southwestern Europe, northwestern USA, South
Africa, and northern Argentina. Meanwhile, rainfall totals in the rest regions
were near or above normal, and rainfall totals 30%
more than normal were observed in most of Australia, northwestern China and
southern West Siberia, with 200% more than normal in local region.
General Circulation Features
Northern Hemisphere: During the summer, the mean 500hPa geopotential height field was near normal. Subtropical high both in the northern hemisphere and in Northwest Pacific were stronger and larger than normal.
Southern Hemisphere: During the summer, the mean 500hPa geopotential height field exhibited zonal circulation prevailed at mid-high latitudes. In the height anomaly field, 4 dam below-normal heights were observed over the ocean southwest to South America and south to Africa. Meanwhile, 4 dam above-normal heights were observed over parts of eastern South Pacific, the region from southern South Pacific to Antarctic.
