Seasonal Highlights

1. Climate in China

During autumn 2014, the seasonal surface air temperature averaged over China was10.7¡æ, with 0.8¡æ above normal (9.9¡æ). The mean precipitation was 134.6mm over China, which was 12.4% above normal (119.8mm). For the season, extremes of Daily Temperature Drop (DTD), Consecutive Precipitation (CP) and Consecutive Precipitation Day (CPD) were observed in China.

 

2. General Circulation Features

Northern Hemisphere: During the autumn of 2014, in the 500hPa geopotential height anomaly field, positive anomalies above 4 dam covered northern and eastern Europe, the regions from eastern Russia to parts of the Arctic Ocean via Alaska, locations of central North Atlantic Ocean, with central values above 8 dam over the northern and eastern Europe. Meanwhile, negative anomalies below -4 dam covered the regions from central and western Siberia to northeastern Central Asia, parts of northeastern North Pacific Ocean, parts of eastern North America and locations of northeastern North Atlantic Ocean.

Southern Hemisphere: For the month, in the 500hPa geopotential height anomaly field, positive anomalies above 4 dam were observed over the most Antarctica, locations of the central South Pacific Ocean, parts of southern Australia and its adjacent waters, locations of the southeastern South Atlantic Ocean, with central values above 8 dam in locations of the Antarctica. Meanwhile, negative anomalies below -4 dam were observed over the mid-southern South Indian Ocean and locations of the southwestern South Pacific Ocean, with central values below -8 dam in locations of the mid-southern South Indian Ocean.
