Climate in China

In this season, the mean surface air temperatures were observed 0.5-1.0below normal in most of eastern and northern China. Temperatures were observed 1.0 above normal in northern Heilongjiang, the Qing-Zang Plateau and the nearby regions, with positive departures above 2 in most of Qinghai and portions of Tibet. For the winter, precipitation totals were 30% ~100% more than normal in most of Northeast China, North China, western Xinjiang, northernwest gansu, western and eastern Tibet, northern Sichuan and the Middle and Lower reaches of the Yangtze River, with 100-200% more than average in local regions. Meanwhile, precipitations were observed 30-100% below average in Guangdong, western Guangxi, most of Yunnan and central Tibet.

Climate in the World

During this winter, the mean surface air temperatures were 0.5 below normal in most of Asia, southwestern Europe and northern Africa, with negative departures of –2~ –4 in the regions from the Baykal Lake to the Balkhash Lake. Meanwhile, temperatures were observed near or above normal in other regions, with 1~2 above normal in central USA, eastern and northern Europe, the coasts of central-western Russia, most of the Qing-Zang Plateau, the Indochina Peninsula and western Australia, with more than 3 above normal in local regions.

In this winter, rainfall totals were 30% more than average in most of mid-latitude regions in North Hemisphere and parts of northwestern Africa, with 100% ~200% more than average in local regions. Meanwhile, precipitation totals were more than 30% below average in northern Asia, northwestern USA, most of Australia and the regions from South China to the Indochina Peninsula.

General Circulation Features

      Northern Hemisphere: During winter, the mean 500hPa geopotential height field exhibited a 3-wave pattern at the mid-high latitudes. Geopotential height were observed near or above normal in the mid-high latitudes, with positive anomalies above 8 dam dominated the northern North Atlantic Ocean the coasts of central Russia, and the regions south to Alaska, with the maximum above 16 dam.

 

Southern Hemisphere: The mean 500hPa geopotential height field exhibited that a zonal circulation prevailed at the mid-high latitudes. In the height anomaly field, near-normal heights were observed in most of the southern hemisphere.
